In fact - most websites are nowhere near as effective to business owners as they would like them to be - and whenever myself or other SEO consultants are asked to look into the reason for this, it's pretty much always lack of traffic that is the main issue, rather than pricing or effectiveness of the website content to gain enquiries or sales.

OK, before I answer this, let me ask you, What IS SEO?
SEO, search engine optimisation (UK spelling, it's optimization if you're in the US), means to optimise your website (both on the page, and off page - which means backlinks) in order to get your website found on Google & the other search engines. This can be done by an SEO consultant / contractor / company - or you can go through the learning curve & learn to do it yourself.
So, SEO / search engine optimisation means to plug your website into Google & the other search engines, to create streams of traffic from the search engines to your website.
So - do you need SEO? The answer is a massive YES if you want people to find your website when they search Google & the other search engines for terms that relate to your products or services!

It's not plugged in.
If you have a website, but it's not "plugged in" to Google & other search engines, then it's pretty useless.
Many people now talk about "web presence" but what actually is web presence?
The web is just a network of files, on servers, sitting in server farms.....
It's search engines which connect these files, from these servers - with the people sat in front of their computers searching for information.
So a "Web Presence" really means a "search engine presence" - if your website is not plugged in to the search engines, it's just a file, sitting on a server, in a server farm.
OK, you can drive traffic to your site with offline marketing & paid online marketing such as pay per click marketing, and completely ignore the search engines - if you're completely & utterly deranged! ;-)
over 70% of adults use the internet on a daily basis, and over 85% of internet users use search engines on a regular basis.
In the UK, there are over 16,000 searches each minute, on google alone! If your website isn't "plugged in" to the search engines with good SEO - then you're missing out on a huge amount of potential business, and you're leaving it there on the table for your competitors, as their websites are plugged in to the search engines, where people can find it - and yours is just sitting all lonesome & sad on a server, in a server farm....

Some people are under the impression that Search Engine Optimisation is an old hat method of traffic generation which is no longer required due to newer methods of traffic generation such as pay per click marketing.
Anyone under this illusion, is missing out BIG TIME, and is leaving a Masses of business on the table for their competitors!
The best way to get targeted traffic, is via Google organic (free) search engine results. Roughly 80% of search engine traffic is via the free organic results, and this is far higher in some markets, so ignore the free organic search engine results at your peril!
The only way to increase traffic from Google organic search engine results, is SEO. FACT.
So, the answer to "Do You Really Need SEO?" is - YES, unless you want to leave most of the available traffic in your market, for your competitors.
If you doubt any of the above, just ask yourself - when you want something, what do you do?
Do you look do a banner to click on, do you wait for an email to land in your inbox, do you go look for an online or offline directory? No, the chances are that like most people, you'll use on of the main search engines - more than likely Google.
92% of traffic from Google
The figures for the market share Google organic results has, will usually be somewhere in the region of 70-80 % of all search engine traffic - however I believe, from my own experience, that this is out of date information.
I have found, from personal experience, that Google organic (free results, not sponsored) search results is responsible for much higher figures than this.
Recently I was asked by a client (who has top positions in all of the major search engines) what percentage of the traffic was coming from Google organic results - I checked the stats, and found that the percentage had risen to 92%. This is amazing, considering that this website has just about the same positions on most search engines.
So - If you need more sales (which is even more important in the current climate) then you need all the traffic you can get, and the biggest potential for traffic is Google organic results....
You Need SEO!
It's a fact, and I'll argue it until I'm blue in the face, unless you want to leave a huge percentage of the available business to your competitors, you need to employ search engine optimisation, SEO, on your website.
Do you Need an SEO consultant / SEO contractor / company?
Well - you would expect me to shout "YES!" I'm going to be biased, seeing as I am an SEO consultant ;-) however, not necessarily.
If you have the time to learn how to do your own SEO, and the time to then apply what you have learned, then you can actually do your own SEO, it's not rocket science, and it's a great skill to have.
The problem is, although it's not rocket science, it's quite difficult to learn everything you need to know - I should know, it took me a number of years to really learn SEO properly, and I made a lot of mistakes along the way - usually by either getting hold of duff information (there's a lot of info out there, but a lot of it is either out of date or just totally wrong) or by wrongly applying the right info.
So - if you do want to do your own SEO, then go for it, but don't expect to be able to achieve the same kind of results that a good professional SEO consultant can achieve, straight away. It's going to take you some time to figure everything out - even with the best information. Also, be prepared for spending some serious time, SEO is not something you can do effectively in a half hearted manner, it takes a lot of application, and a lot of it is tedious.
